Free Legal Consultation in Dubai: How the First Meeting with a Lawyer Works
Most people book a first meeting with a lawyer when something has already gone wrong: a developer has missed a handover date, a business partner has stopped answering, an employer has terminated a contract, or a court notice has arrived in Arabic. The first consultation will not fix that on the spot. What it should give you is a clear picture: where you stand under UAE law, what your realistic options are, and what each will cost in time and money.
This guide explains how that meeting works with us, what to prepare, how fees work in Dubai, and how to judge whether the lawyer in front of you is the right one.
Is the first consultation free?
With us, yes. The first consultation is free, whether it takes place in our office or online.
That is not universal in Dubai. Some firms charge a consultation fee for the first meeting, some offset it against later work, and some offer a short free call before a paid session. Ask before you book, and ask what the free part covers.
Lawyer fees in Dubai: how pricing usually works
There is no fixed tariff for legal work in Dubai, and fees for the same task vary between firms. The common structures are:
- hourly rates, typical for advisory work and open-ended matters
- fixed fees for a defined piece of work, such as a contract review or a company setup
- stage-based fees for disputes, with a separate price for each stage
Whatever the structure, get a written estimate that states what is included, what is excluded, and which third-party costs come on top. Court fees, government charges, translation and notarisation are normally separate from the lawyer's fee.

How the first meeting works
Before: a short message and your documents
Send a few sentences on what happened, where (which emirate, free zone or court), what you want to achieve, and any deadline. Attach the key documents. During: questions first, then options
Expect the lawyer to ask a lot of questions. Outcomes under UAE law often turn on details that clients consider minor: the date a notice was served, the governing law clause, the free zone the company is registered in, whether a document was ever signed.
Then you should get:
- an assessment of your position under the applicable law
- the realistic options, including doing nothing
- the risks and likely timeline of each option
- what is needed to proceed: documents, a power of attorney, translations, your presence in Dubai
After: a proposal, not pressure
If you want to go ahead, we confirm the scope and the fee and put it in an engagement letter. If you decide not to, that is fine. The first consultation carries no obligation.
In the office or online

Online. Clients abroad, or simply busy, usually have the first meeting by video call. For a first consultation this loses very little: documents are reviewed on screen either way, and decisions rest on the paperwork. What to bring to a first meeting with a lawyer
For any matter:
- passport copy, and residence visa and Emirates ID if you have them
- a timeline: one line per event, with dates
- every contract and amendment, including the ones signed in a hurry
- correspondence: emails, messages and notices, with dates
- proof of payments relevant to the dispute
- anything from a court, the police or a government authority, even if you cannot read it
- your list of questions

Documents in Arabic can be brought as they are. Do not pay for translations in advance; the lawyer will tell you which ones will actually be needed.
How to find a good lawyer in Dubai
The first meeting is also your interview of the lawyer. A few questions separate the careful from the merely confident:
- Who exactly will work on my matter, and will I deal with them directly?
- If this goes to court, who will represent me and in what capacity? In Dubai, a legal consultancy firm may not plead before the Dubai Courts; court representation is done by advocates. The answer should be clear.
- What would you do in my position, and why?
- What is the timeline, and what does it depend on?
- What is included in the fee, and what is not?
- What do I need to do myself?
Beyond the conversation, check the basics. Law firms in Dubai are licensed by the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department, which publishes a directory of registered advocates and legal consultants that you can search by name. What you will not get at a first meeting
A guarantee. We do not promise outcomes, in court, with an authority or with a bank. A lawyer who guarantees a result at the first meeting either does not know the details yet or is telling you what you want to hear.
A final opinion without documents. Without the paperwork, the analysis is conditional: "if the contract says X, then…". That is still useful, but a firm conclusion needs the documents.
A decision made for you. The lawyer sets out options and risks. The choice is yours.
